One of the most exciting aspects of a community project is the new friendships and connections that are made through the sharing of common interests. Ulva's great depth of history is one such area that has brought together its own little community, with people involved from all over the country and beyond.
Düsseldorf resident and dear friend of Ulva, Dr Amiria Salmond has invested a fantastic amount of time and effort into the research and compilation of various census records pertaining to Ulva and the nearby islands of Gometra and Little Colonsay. Amiria is an academic specialising in social anthropology and with affiliations to the Universities of Auckland (NZ) and Cambridge (UK). In her work for this study Amiria pulled together census records from 1841, 1851 and 1861. Amiria was also helped by Ian Phillips of Isle of Mull Genealogy and the Mull Museum. With generous permission, Ian offered his own research and material for inclusion in the study, very many thanks to him for that.
We're delighted to be able to offer this study in full for public consumption. Please find a link below which will open a new window containing the study.
