Getting To Ulva

Getting to the Isle of Ulva is part of the magic of the Island. Although the crossing between Ulva Ferry and the Boathouse on Ulva is not wide, it is like crossing into a different world. Equally, the crossing can be challenging, particularly in windy weather, so should not be taken lightly if crossing using your own craft rather than the ferry service.

The Ulva Ferry

The crossing from Ulva Ferry to the Boathouse on Ulva is operated by Rhuri Munro. This is a privately run foot passenger ferry, but bicycles can be transported for a small extra fee. Please note the tracks on Ulva are very rough so mountain bikes are reccomended.

The Ulva Ferry

By Car

Driving from the ferry terminal at Craignure on Mull to Ulva Ferry takes around 45 minutes, with the nine mile drive from Salen onwards along a single tracked road that runs alongside the stunning scenery of Loch na Keal and the imposing bulk of Ben More.

During Busy times, this can take a little bit longer, so leave yourself enough time.

As there are no cars on Ulva, vehicles must be left on Mull. There is daytime parking at Ulva Ferry, which has been recently upgraded via a project managed by Mull and Iona Community Trust (MICT). There are also some hook-up points.

By Bus/Community Transport

There is a regular public bus service that runs from Craignure to Tobermory via Salen that is run by West Coast Motors, that coincides with the Calmac ferry services on most days.

From Salen, there is an option to book the Ulva Ferry Community Transport run by Mull and Iona Community Trust, but please book well in advance, as this can be very busy during the high season.
Ulva Ferry Community Transport

By Boat

There is an idyllic 8 berth pontoon at Ulva Ferry, with power, water, red diesel and WiFi; toilets available. This is managed by Mull and Iona Community Trust and a charge is levied for its use, depending on the size of craft.

Kayaks and small boats can be launched from the Ulva Ferry slipway, but please avoid times when fishing boats are loading or offloading on at the pier as access is required at these times via the roadway.

Kayaks and small craft can also land on the Ulva side of the sound at shore immediately in front of the Boathouse Restaurant. However, please avoid mooring at the slipway as this is required for the Ulva Ferry. If you do need to moor on the slipway, please contact the ferryman first to see if this is possible.
